UNION TOUR SEES BITTER FRUITS OF EXPLOITATION

Hazards 77 photofile, Jan-Mar 2002

Little luxuries Liqueurs from Cointreau and Grand Marnier. First world luxuries made in third world conditions for poverty wages. This was the finding of UK union GMB's investigation last year in the Caribbean island of Haiti.

And GMB Northern Region's Rehana Azam and Barry Sewell found other multinationals making a respectable profit from far from respectable working conditions in the factories and plantations of the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation. Novella, providing coffee for multinationals Nescafe and Lavazza, treats its workers "worse than dogs," GMB's investigators concluded.
