Hazards 92 photofeature, October-December 2005 How can thousands of workers in one of the world’s richest nations die each year because they face obvious and preventable hazards at work? The Hazards Campaign’s Hilda Palmer warns that safe workplaces don’t come about by accident. Workers have to organise for the sake of their health. The Hazards Campaign was formed in 1988 because we live in a far from ideal world. Even now, in the 21st century, millions of workers in the UK are sick because of hazards they have faced at work. Hundreds of thousands are injured each year (Hazards 91).
The Hazards Campaign - an informal network of local hazards and occupational health groups, health and safety campaign organisations, asbestos groups and local and national unions and trades councils - is interested in the burden borne by working people who suffer because simple, affordable and practical measures are not taken to protect their health. It believes the first duty of any safety enforcement regime should be to those who face the risks at work, not those who create them. order Find out more about the Hazards Campaign |
