APRIL 2006 PSI: Workers' Memorial Day Activities 2006 Public Services International (PSI) urges members to join 28 April activities PSI: The Public Services International has issued a Newsletter reminding its members that 28 April, the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers provides them with an opportunity to highlight the effects of unsustainable work, workplaces and forms of production on workers’ lives and well-being. The bulletin, which is contained in the March 2006 issue of the PSI Newsletter “World News”, advises members that selected themes for 2006 are: Asbestos and the Global Union ‘Ban Asbestos’ Campaign; HIV/AIDS - workplace aspects and implementation of programme responses; and ILO Conventions and Instruments that relate to Occupational, Health and Safety, including those related to employment transition. Trade unions, it says, can use this occasion to raise the awareness of broad sectors of the public concerning the health and safety issues that concern us all The PSI is the global union federation for public sector trade unions with some 650 affiliated trade unions in 150 countries. Together, these unions organise more than 20 million public sector workers, providing services in central government, health and social care, municipal and community services, and public utilities. Alan Leather, Deputy General Secretary of PSI, is the Chair of the HIV/AIDS Global Unions Steering Committee, which is focusing its 28 April efforts on a campaign to convince the Heads of State of G8 countries attending next July’s G8 Summit in Russia to create a permanent high-level G8 working group on HIV/AIDS.
