Hard to stomach

A study of restaurant workers in the US has uncovered something diners might find hard to swallow - about 12 per cent of those interviewed said they had worked while sick with vomiting and diarrhoea. Restaurants with the heaviest workloads were the most likely to have sick employees on duty. Policies that encourage workers to tell managers when they are ill “may be cost-effective interventions for restaurants, given restaurants’ substantial financial losses associated with foodborne illness outbreaks,” concluded the authors.
