Angola

Uniao Nacional dos Trabalhadores de Angola (UNTA-CS) Uniao Nacional dos Trabalhadores de Angola (UNTA-CS) has called upon its member organisations to support International Workers' Memorial Day by raising workers' awareness about work risks and to promote preventive measures. UNTA-CS has set 28 April targets in specific regions and sectors that will lead to a final evaluation report next June 30. Affiliates have been asked to emulate a national 28 April conference event, which will focus on risks and decent work.

Events are organised in four provinces of Angola: Luanda, Benguela, Cabina and Huambo. Secretary General Manuel Angusto Viage said they have organised 28 April events for the last three years and are now doing so on an annual basis.

The accident workplace fatality rate for Angola is 21/100,000 workers (more than twice that of China). Angola also imports over 1,360 tons of asbestos per year, placing it in yet another trade union priority list for the banning of the product. More details: untadis@netangola.cor

AMWU Rising deaths another reason for ABCC to go
Union members commemorated workers who died at work or through work related injuries on Tuesday 28 April as part of International Workers’ Memorial Day.

AMWU members participated in nationwide meetings, rallies and remembrance ceremonies, which this year highlighted the poor level of health and safety and discrimination faced by workers in the construction industry from Australian Building and Construction Commission established by the Howard Government.

At rallies in Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne, and in workplaces across the country, a minute’s silence was observed to remember those who have died at work. more

Confederation of Benin Trades Unions The Confederation of Benin Trades Unions (UNSTB) will host events on the prevention of work hazards on 30 April. The theme will be: ‘Health at work: Better warnings about risks, mean better protection of the victims.’ The unions will highlight the need for everyone to have access to the universal health insurance scheme (RAMU). In Benin, fewer than 1 million people have this coverage, less than 12.5 per cent of the total population. The unions will put pressure on the government to quickly implement related measures to deliver better health and safety at work.

Brazil 28 April 28 April in Brazil will be marked by a joint initiative of the main national trade union confederations – CUT, CGTB, Força Sindical, NCST, UGT. and CTB. They will be looking for improvements to current legislation concerning social protection and accident insurance and to promote employer investments in safer and healthier workplaces.

The National Parliament will hear of the trade union priorities on 28 April in a special session to remember dead and injured workers. This will kick-off a national campaign to enlist trade unions, professional associations, experts, OHS researchers and MPs to a  consensus bill that would review and improve current national legislation.

The trade union targets seek to improve safety and health at the workplace, as well as social insurance systems.

As in previous years Brazil will host hundreds of activities at regional and local levels headed by local trade unions, public services branch and academics to remember dead and injured workers from throughout the country. Millions of workers and the public at large will hear the 28 April messages.

A special partnership of trade unions and local administrations of the ABC Region (comprises seven cities in the most industrialised area of the country) is  organising a range of activities during a “Week of 28 April as Workers Memorial Day”.

The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) Unions say no to violence! ITF will hold its Action Day on 28 April 2009. The main theme for this event will focus on violence in public transport. The ITF Railway Workers' Section Conference in December 2008 unanimously endorsed this campaign day and agreed to invite ITF unions who represent bus and taxi workers, where relevant and appropriate. It is no coincidence that this global event takes place on the Workers' Memorial Day.

Many ITF unions have already highlighted the issues related to harassment and violence at work in the past and we are hoping that an international focus will further deliver the union message firmly to transport users, fellow colleagues, media, policy-makers and politicians.

Europe

EU-OSHA The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work headquartered in Bilbao, Spain will continue to carry its 2008 theme of “Good Occupational Health for All Workers” into the activities it promotes for International Workers' Memorial Day 2009.

The Agency is continuing this focus because the rate of occupational disease, injury and death is not subsiding. Every three and a half minutes somebody in the EU dies from work-related causes; more than 150,000 deaths a year are caused by either work-related accidents (8,900) or occupational diseases (142,000).
