CGT-RA: On 28th April, the entire staff and the National Secretariat of the Confederación General del Trabajo de la República Argentina (CGT-RA) will organise a commemorative action in its headquarters and will ask the Argentinean government to speed up its procedure to ratify ILO Conventions 155 and 187.  

In workplaces, workers will cease work and observe a minute of silence in memory of the fallen and injured workers.

CTA: On 29th and 30th April, the Central de Trabajadores de la Argentina (CTA) will organise the National Encounter for Workers' Health and Workplace conditions and environment. The workshop will mention ILO Convention 155, will elaborate a National Plan of Action among others and will be attended by trade unionists from Brazil and Uruguay.

CUT: The Central Unica dos Trabalhadores (CUT) will start its 28th April activities on 26th April with an act of protest in front of the 3rd Brazilian Congress of Medical Experts. On 28th April, CUT members will take part in a public audience in the Chamber of Deputies. Both events are part of a CUT campaign, in partnership with other trade unions, to demand the drafting and the implementation of a new code of ethics for medical staff.

SMAM: On 28th April, 8:00 p.m., the Metalworker’s Union from Aluminio and Mairinque (Sindicato dos Metalúrgicos de Alumínio e Mairinque), filliated at Força Sindical will organise a Seminar, in a College called Dom Pedro, in São Roque (São Paulo), Brazil.

The seminar title is “Health and Safety for Employees”. We will remember the date and some accidents involved our metalworker’s employees in our companies in Brazil.

CITUB: On 28th April, the Bulgarian Confederation of Independent Trade Unions (CITUB) will organise a high-level event in front of the union building in Sofia. Media partners will be present along with representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, employers’ organizations, labour inspectors and more than 300 CITUB members to honor the dead and injured at work.

CITUB will hand '“PROMETEIYA Awards” to companies with high OHS standards.

In most Bulgarian cities, a minute of silence and flowers will commemorate dead and injured workers.

FTBFF/FNTCS/SNTBB: In Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, the three BWI Affiliates will conduct one day workshop for OHS Committees and same time carry a workplace OHS Campaign at SOGEA SATOM Road Construction site and also host a media campaign.

BWTUC: The Building and Wood Workers Trade Union of Cambodia (BWTUC) will be picketing the Canadian Embassy.

CAW: CAW President Ken Lewenza is calling for continued vigilance and stricter enforcement of health and safety protections by provincial and federal officials as well as the vigorous prosecution of employers when their actions cause death or serious injury.
"There are approximately one million workplace injuries a year in Canada and over a thousand Canadian families are wrought with pain and suffering when a loved one does not return home from their job," Lewenza said. More

CLC: On 28th April, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) and its affiliates are organising a great number of diversified events. The number of people killed at work each year in Canada has risen for the past 15 years. This is in contrast to almost every other OECD country where the incidence of workplace fatalities is declining.

Examples of activities include  Day of Mourning events across Ontario, organised by the Workers Health & Safety Centre. Trade unions will promote the Day's significance in the local media, lobby politicians to recognize the Day through proclamation, try to convince employers and public institutions to lower flags to half-mast, among other actions. 

In British Columbia, WorkSafeBC will organise public ceremonies across the state to remember workers who have lost their lives as a result of work-related incidents or occupational diseases.

El numero de trabajadoras y trabajadores que mueren en el trabajo cada año en Canadá esta aumentando desde hace 15 años. CLC:Le 28 Avril, le Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) et ses affiliés organiseront un grand nombre d`événements divers. Le nombre de travailleuses et de travailleurs qui meurent au travail chaque année augmentent depuis 15 ans au Canada. Ceci est contraire à la tendance dans la plupart des pays de l`OCDE où le nombre de morts sur les lieux de travail diminue.

Comme exemples d`activités, il y aura des Jours de Deuil dans tout l`Ontario, organisés par le Workers Health & Safety Centre. Les syndicats promouvront la signification de ce Jour dans les médias locaux, feront du lobbying envers les politiques pour qu`ils reconnaissent ce Jour à travers la proclamation, essaieront de convaincre les employeurs et les institutions publiques de mettre les drapeaux en berne, parmi d`autres actions. 

En Colombie Britannique, WorkSafeBC organisera des cérémonies publiques dans tout l`État pour se souvenir des travailleuses et des travailleurs qui ont perdu leurs vies à cause d`incidents ou de maladies du travail.

WorksafeBC: Every year, WorkSafeBC, the B.C. Federation of Labour, and the Business Council of British Columbia co-host a public ceremony to remember workers who have lost their lives as a result of work-related accidents or occupational diseases.

This year, the Day of Mourning ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 28, 10:30 a.m., on the southwest side of the Vancouver Convention Centre (1055 Canada Place). Families, workers, employers, and other interested parties are invited to attend. Order decals and posters You and your co-workers can wear the decals to help raise awareness of the importance of safety at work, and to remember those who lost their lives in the course of their work.

CSN/FTQ/CSD: On 28th April, at 10am, the members of the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux (CSN), the Fédération des Travailleurs du Québec (FTQ) and the Centrale des Syndicats Démocratiques (CSD) will remain silent for a minute and wear a black ribbon to commemorate dead and injured workers.

Trade unions will also organise a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Labour offices to demand the full implementation of a 30-year old OHS law which gives prevention rights and mechanisms to all workers. Today, less than 15% of workers have access to those rights and mechanisms in Quebec.

The Ethiopia Construction Wood, Metal and Other Trade unions will hold a meeting with Employers, OHS representatives at Amara region Bahir Dar Town about 560 Km from Addis Ababa. During the event there will light candle at accident site where workers died while on duty.

OKKS: Mass meeting in remembrance of dead workers and also to raise awareness on health and safety for union members at Dhenkanal district.

DANMU: Commemoration of dead workers who had worked at some of the CWG worksites followed by a petition to the State / Central Government.

FKUI: In conjunction with International Seminar on Infrastructure, FKUI will distribute campaign materials and t-shirts on ban asbestos. Most of the speakers in this seminar will come from cement companies.

KAHUTINDO Indonesian Forestry and Allied Workres' Union will organise demonstrations in two provinces (East Kalimantan and East Java) on safety for forestry workers.

ICTU: The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) on this 28th April will ask for stronger safety laws and protections in the workplace through an event in the Labour History Museum in Dublin. The focus will be on work-related suicide. Trade unions will highlight how employers are responsible for safe systems and risk assessments in the workplace, including for work-related stress.

On 28th April, ICTU members will also wear a purple forget-me-knot and observe two minutes of silence at 12 am.

As part of using tree planting to honour workers who have lost their lives due to hazardous working conditions, FNV Bouw Netherlands also pledged to carry similar event in Netherlands as “Tree planting Chain” is building up with messages on OHS issues.

FNV: On 28th of April, the Federatie Nederlandse Vakbeweging (FNV) will advocate the use of Health Hazard Evaluation teams, or ‘Flying Doctors’ to detect possible pathogenic factors in the workplace, when employees report heath complaints to the Netherlands Center of Occupational Diseases.

The proposed model of ‘flying doctors’ is used in the United States by the NIOSH-Institute where such teams can make visits to ‘suspected ‘ workplaces.

CTU: The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi (CTU) will organise services and rallies around New Zealand on 28th April. The President of CTU will attend the service in Blackball as a poignant reminder of the Pike River mine tragedy which killed 29 workers.

Trade unions will demand investigations into this accident and will ask the government to make OHS a priority.

PGFTU: On 28th April, Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions PGFTU has organized  a huge ceremony and commemorative action in its headquarters on Workers’ Memorial Day to commemorate dead and injured workers. And reflect on the increase of stress, violence, threats and other psycho-social risks in the workplace as well as the high rate of industrial accidents among young workers and newly employed.

Shaher Sae’d the General Secretary of the PGFTU asked the Palestinian  Government to speed up its procedures to ratify ILO Conventions 155 and 187 to avoid the death and injured of the workers in worksites.

Sae’d also stressed the need of establishing of a national council on health and safety to help employees in finding ways to increase safety and security jobs. PGFTU’s General Secretary also focused on the need to ensure that OHS laws should be implemented in all worksites.

Sae’d expressed his wish to commemorate the next Workers’ Memorial Day in Jerusalem the coming capital of Palestine.

The event evaluated trade unions achievements in all regions, emphasized the crucial role played by trade unions, called for strong regulation and effective enforcement in securing safer workplaces, saluted  and  honored the families who lost members due to work incidents .

At the end of the ceremony a candle was light and there was 2 minutes of  silence  in a memory of  dead and injured workers.

TUCP/ALU/BWI: On 28th April, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), the Associated Labor Unions (ALU) and the Building and Woodworkers International (BWI) will ask the Filipino government to inspect public buildings and to reduce exposure of workers and their families to asbestos and asbestos containing materials.   
The World Health Organisation estimates that 125 million workers worldwide are exposed to asbestos in their workplaces and 107,000 workers die each year of Asbestos-related Diseases.

Trade unions members will also organise prayers and light candles in memory of dead and injured workers, review the progress of the National Program for the Elimination of Asbestos-Related Diseases, organise a press conference, send calls to action and outreach in malls.

Victims of occupational accidents will share their experience and trade unions and other stakeholders will explain how to improve safety standards in the workplace.

On this day, the IOHSAD will also release the Occupational Accidents Statistics 2010 and launch two major events: the Safety Pledge and the Graffiti Contest versus Asbestos.

UBU: The Uganda Building Union will gather employers representatives, Union OHS Committee members to discuss safety issues. Prior to the discussion there will be a ceremonial greening marked by tree planting in conjunction with Nile ply Limited at Nakasongola.

The TUC will also reveal the disastrous effects that the UK government cuts in Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authority resources, and the lack of inspection and enforcement activity will have on working people. All across the UK, unions will organise activities ranging from rallies and services to workplace meetings and will observe a minute of silence at 12am.

AFL-CIO: On 28th April, the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) will pay a special tribute to dead and injured workers as, in the United States, it’s the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, where 146 workers were killed trapped behind locked doors with no way to escape and the 40th anniversary of OSHA and the right of workers to a safe job.

Trade unions are organising more than 60 events in workplaces and in public spaces all across the United States, events ranging from religious ceremonies to processions, litanies of names and luncheons.

También es el 40º aniversario del OSHA y del derecho de los trabajadoras y trabajadores a un trabajo seguro.

VNUARDW: Solidarity gathering – discussion on working conditions in forestry sector.

ILA: EU-OSHA, with Jukka Takala as its Director, is the occupational safety and health information point for the European Union.  

As part of the European Campaign 2010-2011 on Safe Maintenance, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work organised for the tenth time the European Good Practice Awards in occupational health and safety. The awards aim to demonstrate, by example, the benefits of following good safety and health practices to all European employers and workers. The 2010-11 competition recognised companies or organisations that have made outstanding and innovative contributions to promote safe maintenance. The awards ceremony for the competition takes place in Hungary on April 28.

In support of the day, the Agency has a “World day” page and will publish a blog entry highlighting the impact of worker representation.

As a tripartite organisation, EU-OSHA recognises the vital role trade unions and their members play in the reduction of risks to workers, from involvement in the strategic European approaches to occupational safety and health down to the day-to-day interventions to protect workers in their place of work.

BWI: The Building and Woodworkers' International (BWI) is planning diversified and numerous events on 28th April across the Asia-Pacific and African regions.

In India for instance, five BWI affiliates will mobilise and sign petitions, organise press, mass and official meetings and bring together worker victims and/or their families. In Vietnam, VNUARDW will organise a solidarity gathering. There will be picketings in front of the Canadian embassy in Cambodia, organised by BWTUC to fight asbestos. Other events are planned in Nepal, in the Philippines, in Malaysia, in Indonesia and in Timor Leste.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, three BWI affiliates will hold a public conference on Health and Safety with an OHS specialist and representatives from the Ministry of Labour. In Uganda, the Uganda Building Union will, as well as other trade unions in other countries, take part in a tree planting chain to highlight health and safety issues during the International year of Forests. This is just a snapshot. More activities are planned in Mali, in Mauritania, in Burkina Faso, in Namibia, in Kenya and in Ethiopia

ICEM: The continuing toll of deaths, injuries, and illnesses is quite simply unacceptable to the ICEM. That is why the ICEM is there to assist its affiliates on any occupational health and safety issue. It is the reason that the ICEM has led the way in bringing occupational health and safety into Global Framework Agreements. It is why the ICEM has an ongoing campaign for the ratification of ILO Convention 176, a long-standing project on HIV/AIDS, and it is also why the ICEM engages other international organizations for better standards and better cooperation in occupational health and safety. more

International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) made clear that `while employers and governments spend enormous sums seeking magical solutions, the ICEM knows that the answer is really quite simple, although burdensome to some in implementing: workers have rights, employers have obligations`. IMF: International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) called for greater empowerment of union safety representatives as the best means to build a safer and healthier workplace. The IMF underlines that `good safety begins with engagement from workers and unions and does not start with expensive consultancy based systems which impede safety by driving down the reporting of minor accidents and near misses`. ITGLWF: International Textile, Garment and Leather workers’ federation (ITGLWF), representing workers in the garment industry has called on its member unions to use health and safety as a means of reaching out to workers and organising them into trade unions. Patrick Itschert, General Secretary of the ITGLWF said: “Working conditions, including safety standards, are notoriously bad in the global garment industry. Unions have a vital role to play in building safer workplaces by identifying problems, raising awareness among workers and negotiating and enforcing improvements”. Full release

ITF: International Transportworkers’ Federation (ITF) has released a new film to help fight workplace violence today. Mac Urata explained: “This is the latest tool in our and our member unions’ long running campaign against violence. We are determined that no one should have to work in fear of assault, harassment or bullying. ”The four minute film aims to empower urban transport workers to say no to violence at work. ITF release

ITUC: The ITUC, in addition to promoting and coordinating internationally this day, will organise its own event at 9.45 am, in the ITUH auditorium, in Brussels, Belgium. Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the ITUC will speak at this ceremony, accompanied by Laurent Vogel, the Health and Safety department Director of the European Trade Union Institute. Activities planned include candle lighting, a minute of silence and the performance of the “Ensemble Vocal Chantfolllies” which will perform among others Jean Ferrat’s “La Commune” and Manu Chao’s “Clandestino”.

IUF: IUF, uniting Food, Farm and Hotel Workers World-Wide has joined 28th April with the support of its Latin American regional, REL-UITA, developing a poster and a dedicated space in their website.

TUAC: Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD (TUAC) highlighted that evidence goes against employers' lobby for weakening workplace regulations. “Better regulation plays an essential role in delivering both economic success and fairness at work, and when it comes to workplace health and safety, success means fewer occupational fatalities, fewer injuries and fewer cases on industrial disease,” according to John Evans, its General Secretary.
